WALKING TOURS IN ENGLAND
Walking tours are a popular reason for many who vacation in England. We have friends who return year after year organized tours. SELF CATERING provides one the opportunity to both participate in guided tours and to hike and walk on your own in the beautiful country side near your accommodations. One of the definitive books about walking in England, A PENNINE JOURNEY, was written by A. Wainwright. However, we and many others consider George Borrow to be the Father of Walking. He walked England and Wales in the mid 1800s, wrote a book, WILD WALES, which describes some of his walks. There are many pubs and hotels which bear his name today. We had a wonderful lunch at the George Borrow Hotel in Ponterwyd, Wales during a day trip from our Ludlow, England self catering property. Walking Tours range in length from just a few miles to treks of over 200 miles. Please allow several days for the later. Planning for a self guided walking tour is essential as we found out from experience. Having the proper walking gear and clothing is especially important. Do your research. Many walking paths are not the nice trails we find in the U.S., but cross fields in which cattle or sheep graze. The land owners have styles or special access if you need to cross a private property. Sometimes you are walking down the road through villages which have no sidewalks. Stop and enjoy tea, desserts, and conversation with the locals. Guided tours are abundant throughout England. They are well worth the cost unless you are a very experienced walker, especially for the longer walks. HAPPY HIKING!
