The production of new balls markedly changed the game with new sets of rules. 1874 saw the birth of modern tennis when Major Walter C. Wingfield patented equipment and rules similar to those in effect today. The first Wimbledon tournament was held in 1877. The only event was men's singles. More changes were to come. The five foot high net was lowered and service boxes wereextended. Women were first invited to enter the Wimbledon tournament in 1884 and men's doubles were introduced that year. A significant boost was given to the game in 1950 when Jack Kramer established the Pro Tour.
